‘Bit of a nightmare’ – Paul Merson predicts the score for Newcastle v Spurs

Paul Merson has shared his prediction ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

Tottenham come into the top flight fixture at St James’ Park on the back of a 3-1 win against relegation battlers Nottingham Forest.

The victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend saw them move back into the top four at the expense of Aston Villa who were held to a 3-3 draw with Brentford.

The battle for the last guaranteed Champions League berth has been a hotly contested affair with both sides heading into the weekend level on points, with Spurs having a slight three goal difference advantage.

Merson predicts Tottenham misery at Newcastle

Merson believes that it will be a trip to forget to Tyneside for Tottenham once again and tipped Ange Postecoglou‘s side to suffer a defeat which would hamper their Champions League hopes.

He told SportsKeeda: “Newcastle United got a great result against Fulham but I can’t recall them playing particularly well. Tottenham, on the other hand, were outstanding against Nottingham Forest, with Micky van de Ven showing his class at the back with another eye-catching display.

“At St. James’ Park, I fancy Newcastle, so I’m going for a 2-1 home win. Tottenham need the points and have a bit of a nightmare run coming up, but I doubt they lose to Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. There is a result for them in that run somewhere, so I think they’ll be safe and finish above Aston Villa in the Premier League top four.

“Prediction: Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham.”

SpursWeb Opinion

Merson’s previous allegiance not only to Arsenal but also Aston Villa certainly often sees him tip Tottenham to drop points, just like he did when he claimed West Ham would beat Tottenham 2-1 when it ended up as a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium.

St James’ Park is never an easy place to go, but Tottenham need to take all three points if they want the fate of Champions League football to be in their own hands with not many games left to play.
