Paul Merson on whether Spurs can return to winning ways against Watford

Paul Merson has given his prediction ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League match against Watford on Wednesday evening.

Spurs return to Wembley looking to put the recent cup disappointment behind them after being knocked out of both domestic cup competitions in the space of four days.

Nothing less than three points will be acceptable in the eyes of most Spurs fans as they look to tighten their grip on a top four finish in the Premier League.

They will be looking over their shoulder with Arsenal and Manchester United in fifth and sixth place respectively just seven points behind Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

After resting the likes of Hugo Lloris, Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen against Crystal Palace there should be more energy in the legs of the players.

Merson who now works as a football pundit has backed Spurs to bounce back after suffering two defeats on the spin and get the win against the Hornets.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s a massive game for Tottenham! They suffered another cup exit at the weekend so they need to get back to winning ways, and fast!

“Mauricio Pochettino has said the focus is on top four so he cannot afford defeat here.

“Watford rested almost everybody against Newcastle. They made 11 changes so they will be raring to go at Wembley.

“This will be a very hard game for Spurs but I’m backing them to edge it.

“Prediction: 2-1.”
