Paul Merson predicts the winner of Everton vs Spurs

Paul Merson has had his say on who he thinks will win Sunday afternoon’s Premier League match between Everton and Tottenham Hotspur.

The former Arsenal midfielder is now better known for being a football pundit on Sky Sports.

Despite his firm allegiances to the Woolwich, Merson has tipped Tottenham to continue their recent run of form.

Tottenham’s recent record at Goodison Park is very healthy, having not lost in any of their past five visits.

Mauricio Pochettino will once again be without the services of five players for the trip to Merseyside.

Serge Aurier (groin), Mousa Dembele (ankle), Jan Vertonghen (thigh), Eric Dier (appendicitis) and Victor Wanyama (knee) are all still sidelined.

However, there is good news with the return of Davinson Sanchez. The defender has missed nine games in all competitions since picking up a hamstring problem in the Champions League win against PSV in November.

Idrissa Gueye is available again after missing Everton’s 3-1 defeat against Premier League champions Manchester City with a minor groin problem.

Merson told Sky Sports: “This is a hard game for both sides. Everton are a team that never seem to get over the line and are in a bit of a bad patch at the moment.

“They won’t have to take the game to Tottenham; they seem to fall short in games where they’re expected to attack, like against Newcastle and Watford at Goodison.

“But if the game opens up, I think this will be Tottenham’s. I think their win at Arsenal is a massive confidence boost. It’ll be hard but I’ll go for Spurs.

“Prediction: 1-3.”
