Paul Merson question’s rumoured Spurs target’s top flight ability

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has questioned a reported £40 million transfer value of Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon.

The 18-year-old has been rumoured to have been on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar prior to their promotion to the Premier League last summer and the player is expected to depart Craven Cottage at the end of the campaign following their relegation to the Championship.

Sessegnon was valued as highly as £50 million last summer following Tottenham’s interest (Standard), but this fee would have significantly dropped after the left sided player struggled to make an impact in the top flight with the Craven Cottage outfit.

Sessegnon has stalled on signing a new deal and is likely to stay in the Premier League, Fulham are likely to allow him to leave as he is about to enter the final year of his contract.

Merson believes that Sessegnon has failed to make any sort of impression in the top flight which will leave potential suitors questioning what they may have once been prepared to offer.

The former Arsenal midfielder said on yesterday’s Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports News at 2:40 pm: “I think last season, you would have got £40 million for him. Not playing in the Premier League. Potential. Very good in the Championship.

“He is has come up and if I am being honest, he has looked like he doesn’t feel like he should be there. He looked a bit lost sometimes. And I know he’s only 18 and he’s a kid, but I don’t think he has shown anything all season.

“It’s not like you can put together a montage of games together and say ‘this is what he’s done’ and you’re like fair enough. I don’t think you’ll be able to put it together. That’ll be a worry. I think people will wait for another year.”
