Erik Lamela is a player who certainly divides opinion among the Tottenham Hotspur fan base.

The Argentine moved to White Hart Lane from Roma in 2013 for £25.7million (BBC) and has not lived up to his full potential.

Lamela has struggled with injuries during his time in North London including a hip problem which required surgery and kept him sidelined for over a year (Standard).

The 27-year-old looked lively during his displays in pre-season but has failed to take the form into the three Premier League matches to date.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson described Lamela as being ‘awful’ this season in his column for the Daily Star.

After starting each of the three top flight matches this season, it will be interesting to see whether Mauricio Pochettino once again puts his faith into his compatriot in tomorrow’s North London derby at the Emirates.

The Spurs boss has other options to choose from including Heung-min Son, Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura to support Harry Kane up top.

Merson told the Daily Star: “Harry Kane looks frustrated this season as well. He’s coming so short all the time to receive the ball because he isn’t getting any service.

“But that’s because Christian Eriksen isn’t playing. Without him, they don’t have enough vision. Moussa Sissoko is not going to play that killer ball that opens up a packed defence.

“Harry Winks plays to deep to do it, he just keeps things ticking over nicely at the base of midfield, Erik Lamela has been awful, and Lucas Moura feels more like an impact player.

“Who’s going to find Harry Kane?.”

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Whoever wrote this is a moron. Nothing more and nothing less. Lamela created Harry Kanes winning goal against Villa by nicking the ball off grealish. Against City Lamela got a goal AND an assist. He did every one of those with Eriksen on the pitch. Its ridiculous to expect Lamela to carry the creative load of Eriksen but with Eriksen hes arguably our best player so far. Hes had a hand in more goals than any other Spurs player this season and some dope is writing that hes not been able to reproduce his early season form. When you look at the Spurs players that have been poor so far this season, Lamela is the hardest to make a case against. Almost singlehandedly secured us a draw at City, set up the winner at Villa, so in other words Lamela is responsible for every single point we have in the league right now. Wise up.

  2. Well Paul Merson, you slag off Lamela and he gets another assist. You were adamant that Arsenal would rip Spurs apart and win 4-1 easily. How wrong could you have been and had the ref correctly given a penalty at the end Spurs would have won.
Rather than tearing into Spurs players there are plenty of poor Arsenal players to get your teeth into following their performance. Worse defence in the top six. Suggest an apology is due to Spurs fans!!
