Paul Merson warns club against allowing rumoured Spurs target to leave

Paul Merson has said that Chelsea will be making a big mistake by allowing Willian to leave this summer after describing him as a special player.

The Brazilian who is out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs with Mundo Deportivo installing the North Londoners as the favourites to secure his signature should he become a free agent.

Football Insider reported earlier this week that Spurs have made an early move to take advantage of the Chelsea star’s contract stalemate and bring him to North London.

The winger’s agent, Kia Joorabchian recent insisted that nothing had been decided yet about the 31-year-old’s future (Sky Sports).

Merson has claimed that the Blues have dropped the ball regarding the former Anzhi Makhachkala man, who he claimed was good enough to play for Manchester City.

In his recent column for Sky Sports, Merson wrote: “Willian is world-class, and Chelsea haven’t got a lot of world-class players. Willian has been outstanding, he could play for Manchester City tomorrow.

“There will be teams queueing around the block to sign him. He’s a special player and for me, Chelsea have dropped one by letting it get to this situation.”

While Willian can certainly be unplayable on his day, as Tottenham found out in the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea back in December, I disagree that he can be classified as ‘world-class’. He has not been consistent enough to warrant that tag. However, that is not to say that he won’t be a very good squad option for us if we manage to get the deal over the line.
