Former Spurs number one Paul Robinson has insisted Jose Mourinho must be backed in this summer’s transfer window to help improve the squad ahead of next season.

Mourinho pointed out how Jurgen Klopp had been backed financially at Liverpool and what he has now achieved after delivering Liverpool’s first league trophy in 30 years during his fourth season in charge (BBC).

Robinson has admitted it was a fair comparison from Mourinho to demonstrate what is needed to turn Spurs back into title contenders.

“You can understand him wanting to make signings,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“He is a world class manager that has won trophies at the top level and he has been brought in for a reason. The current squad and team have not been up to the standards required.

“He has got to have time to change the mentality and the style of play of this team.

“He questioned how long it took for Jurgen Klopp to win a trophy but you can understand that a manager of his ilk needs time.”

Spurs had finished in the top four for the past four consecutive seasons, however, this campaign is set to end that run.

Currently lying in seventh place with two games left, Spurs are now fully focused on qualifying for next season’s Europa League with Mourinho having stressed the importance of European football (Reuters).

Mourinho’s side has bounced back from the lethargic 0-0 showing against Bournemouth with back-to-back victories over Arsenal and Newcastle to strengthen their fight for a European spot.

Mourinho is right in the sense that Liverpool recruited big and have progressed since then, however, that simply will not happen this summer at Spurs. We will, unfortunately, be dealing on a tight budget which will see us selling players in order to fund purchases.
