Paul Robinson backs Premier League side to sign experienced Tottenham star in January

Paul Robinson has urged Newcastle United to push ahead with a move for Hugo Lloris next month, insisting that the Tottenham man would be an upgrade on both Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius.

The Daily Mirror reported last week that following the long-term injury sustained by Nick Pope, Newcastle were contemplating a move for Lloris in the January transfer window.

The outlet explained that the Magpies hierarchy rated the Frenchman highly and failed with a deadline day move for him in the summer, with the 36-year-old ‘politely rejecting’ them at the time.

It was explained that while Eddie Howe is happy to stick with Dubravka as his first-choice goalkeeper for the time being, he wants to bring an able deputy to the Slovak, with the former Spurs captain said to fit the bill.

A few days ago, L’Equipe also confirmed the Magpies’ interest in Lloris, suggesting that the Tottenham star could accept a short-term deal at St James’ Park, given his current predicament in North London.

Lloris was replaced as Tottenham’s first choice goalkeeper earlier this summer when Guglielmo Vicario joined the club from Empoli and has made a solid impression in his first few months under Ange Postecoglou.

Would Newcastle be the right move for Hugo Lloris?

Robinson has now encouraged Newcastle to do what is necessary to secure Lloris’ services, pointing out that the former French international would cost next to nothing.

The pundit suggested that the Tottenham veteran would start between the sticks for Howe’s men until Pope returns to action.

When asked about the Magpies’ reported interest in Lloris, the former Spurs goalkeeper told Football Insider: “Nick Pope is out for a long time and he has a vital influence over that side. Dubravka or Karius aren’t up to that level but they would do a job in the short term.

“Dubravka, for me, would start over Karius as he has done, but Eddie Howe has been very clever with what he’s said in the press. He’s said they don’t need a new goalkeeper and that the two that they have are good enough for him.

“He has to say that because he has a few more weeks until the start of January before he can go into the market. Whether Financial Fair Play allows that is yet to be seen. There are two goalkeepers they’re looking at in Hugo Lloris and David De Gea that they should look at.

“Lloris could cost next to nothing if they made an agreement with Tottenham to walk away from his contract. Both of those options are better than what Newcastle have now.

“They’re both world-class options, even Lloris at this stage of his career. The other option is Aaron Ramsdale, which would be a bit crazy and not be the right move for me.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I would be extremely surprised if Hugo Lloris accepted a short-term deal at Newcastle without any guarantees of being number one. The 36-year-old would want to join a club where he can be a regular between the sticks, even if it means going to a more obscure division such as the French second tier.
