Paul Robinson believes Spurs player who struggled last season ‘will flourish’ under Nuno

Paul Robinson has backed Steven Bergwijn to flourish under Nuno Espirito Santo this season after enduring a difficult campaign last time out.

Bergwijn made the perfect start to his Tottenham career after joining PSV Eindhoven in January of last year, scoring a screamer in his debut against Manchester City.

The Dutch international showed plenty of glimpses of quality in the second half of 2019/20 season and Spurs fans were hoping that he would build on those performances in his first full campaign at the club.

However, that did not prove to be the case as Berwijn struggled for a regular run in the side last season and was quite wasteful in the final third when opportunities did come his way.

The winger not only fell down the pecking order at Spurs but was subsequently also left out of Netherlands’ squad for Euro 2020.

Bergiwjn has certainly started this campaign like a man who has a point to prove, looking extremely dangerous against both Manchester City and Wolves, while also earning a recall to the national team.

Robinson insisted that he never doubted the 23-year-old’s quality and backed him to live up to his potential under Nuno this season.

The former Spurs goalkeeper told Football Insider: “I think he’s (Bergwijn) always been a top player.

“He was unlucky with game time under Mourinho – I don’t know whether he was defensive-minded enough for him.

“He was a great player when he came, he scored that goal on his debut. Under a different manager, I think he will flourish.

“He could become a main fixture depending on the system Nuno plays, his power, pace and tenacity brings something else that Spurs don’t have.

“I managed to get into the stadium during the pandemic and I was just so impressed when watching him.”

It was always going to take time for Bergwijn to settle into English football after arriving from the Eredivisie. The 23-year-old certainly seems to be playing with a lot more confidence now than he did last season. Hopefully, he can get a goal soon and that could open the floodgates for him.
