Paul Robinson blasts Spurs star who ‘always a mistake in him’

Paul Robinson has admitted that he was bemused as to why Jose Mourinho handed Davinson Sanchez a start against Manchester City.

Sanchez had appeared to have fallen out of favour until December, with Jose Mourinho seeming to have settled on Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld as his first-choice centre-back pairing.

However, the Colombian has started in a handful Premier League games since the turn of the year with the Tottenham boss continuing to shuffle his pack.

A number of Spurs’ defenders have been guilty of some poor mistakes over recent weeks and Sanchez has been no exception.

The 24-year-old failed to cover himself in glory during Tottenham’s 5-4 defeat to Everton last week but he still kept his place in the side for the clash against Man City.

The centre-back’s performance in the 3-0 defeat on Sunday once again left a lot to be desired after he lost his footing for Ilkay Gundogan’s second goal, with the City midfielder capitalising on a straight-forward long ball from goalkeeper Edersen.

Robinson admitted that he expected Alderweireld to start at the Etihad over Sanchez.

The former Spurs goalkeeper told Football Insider: “As always I was surprised Toby Alderweireld did not play.

“Davinson Sanchez was poor. He concedes too many chances.

“There is always a mistake in him and I do not think that is the case with Alderweireld.”

It is pretty clear that this is likely to be Sanchez’s last season at Spurs. In fact, I expect both him and Alderweireld to be sold in the summer as I believe Mourinho will want to bring in two new central defenders.
