Paul Robinson makes big claim about Spurs midfielder

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has been getting rave reviews from across the country after putting in two fantastic displays for England against Montenegro and Kosovo.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson has become the latest to rave about the midfielder’s qualities and claimed that he has to be an automatic pick in the England midfield.

While Winks was deployed in his usual deeper role against Montenegro, he played a more box-to-box role against Kosovo and was impressive in the final third of the pitch which is something that Spurs are not used to seeing from the academy product,

Robinson claimed that despite having just five caps to his name so far, Winks has to be one of the first names in England’s midfield following his recent displays.

He suggested that since Gareth Southgate prefers to play a 4-3-3 formation, the Spurs midfielder’s all round game makes him a better pick ahead of the likes of Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former England No.1 said, “Yeah, a fit Harry Winks is an automatic pick for England for me.

“Gareth is playing a 4-3-3 because of the way Harry Kane and the two that play off him, play, he’s forced into that system as he wants four at the back, so he’s left with three in midfield.

“He’s had problems in that position, he’s chopped and changed, but for me, Harry Winks is an automatic pick when he is fit.

“He showed that he has an offensive side to his game, the run for his goal was outstanding, Harry Kane dropped into the midfield, pulled the defender out, and Winks saw the opportunity.

“He has that in his game as well as the defensive side, so if he’s going to play a three in midfield, the midfield has been an issue, I think Winks is a definite first-pick for him.”

It is great to see people finally recognizing Winks’ immense talent. With the need for a deep lying play-maker becoming more and more important in football with the tactical evolution of the game, Winks has become extremely crucial to Gareth Southgate’s plans. Hopefully, the Spurs midfielder will make the spot his own going into the Euros.
