Paul Robinson says Spurs need to upgrade on 27-year-old this summer

Paul Robinson has claimed that Tottenham need to find a better backup to Hugo Lloris in the summer, insisting that Pierluigi Gollini is ‘not the answer’ for the North London club.

Gollini has not made a single Premier League appearance for Spurs since joining on a season-long loan deal from Atalanta in the summer.

The Lilywhites have the option to buy the Italian goalkeeper permanently for £13m at the end of the season (Sky Sports).

However, the on-loan Atalanta man is also thought to be on the radar of Lazio, who are said to be on the look-out for a replacement for their number one Thomas Strakosha (TuttoMercatoWeb).

Goal claimed earlier this month that Maurizio Sarri’s side are willing to pay €10m (£8.3m) for the 27-year-old while CalcioMercato revealed this week that Fiorentina also have their eye on the Italian international.

Robinson beleives that Antonio Conte’s men should be looking to upgrade on Gollini this summer.

The former Tottenham goalkeeper told Football Insider: “Tottenham need strength in depth behind Lloris and they don’t have it.

“They need another top goalkeeper if they want to challenge for trophies. They need a strong number one/two to challenge Lloris for his place and to keep him on his toes.

“At the moment, Conte doesn’t have the option of taking him out of the team. Gollini is not the answer.

“Lloris is not going to go on forever and they need a succession plan. Look at Liverpool, they have Kelleher behind Alisson. Spurs need a goalkeeper like that behind Lloris.

“All the clubs at the top of the table carry two top goalkeepers and that is something Spurs have to address in the summer and I think they will.”

Gollini has made a couple of errors this season but in fairness to the Italian, he has not been handed enough opportunities to show his quality.

However, it is clear by now that Spurs will not be taking up the option to sign the 27-year-old permanently.

The Atalanta man would probably prefer to return to Serie A in the summer as he will want to be the number one at his next club.
