Paul Robinson suggests Spurs should move for Man City defender

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has said that he wouldn’t be surprised if Tottenham made a move for Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo in the January transfer window.

Cancelo has failed to establish himself in Pep Guardiola’s team after making the switch from Juventus in the summer.

The Spaniard has chosen to start Kyle Walker over the Portuguese full-back in most Premier League and Champions League games this season.

Spurs had their fair share of problems at right-back earlier in the season but Serge Aurier has established himself as the first choice since the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

The Ivorian has put in a number of impressive displays for the lilywhites in the past few weeks but Robinson still believes that Mourinho will prioritise defenders in the January transfer window.

When asked who Spurs should look to target in the January transfer window, the former England goalkeeper told Football Insider: “Cancelo from Man City, the right-back. He’s in and out the Man City team, somebody of that ilk, I think we need a world-class right back.

“Whether Mourinho wants that or whether he wants some ready-made, world-class star that we know, I think he needs to strengthen the back four.”

Based on the reports coming out of the club, it looks as if Mourinho has really taken to Aurier since his arrival and so I think it is unlikely that we will sign a right-back in January. Besides, it is unlikely that Manchester City would be willing to sell Cancelo to a Premier League rival just months after signing him.
