Mahrez struck from close range after just six minutes, something that Spurs were never able to recover from.
Tottenham dominated large parts of the game but were unable to find the back of the net.
A harsh offside call as Harry Kane went through on goal and a blaze over the bar late on from Erik Lamela proved to be Tottenham’s best chances for a breakthrough.
The game quickly became a physical and aerial affair as the battered Wembley pitch made slick passing moves extremely tricky on the cold Monday evening.
The third NFL game this month was played on the turf on Sunday, only 24 hours before the Tottenham Manchester City match kicked off.
Pep Guardiola showered Tottenham with praise after his side clinched the victory, and singled out one man in particular for changing the entire game.
