‘Perfect Toby replacement’ – Some Spurs fans puzzled why club did not sign defender

Some Tottenham fans on social media were left questioning why the North London club did not snap up Joachim Andersen this summer after the centre-back’s accomplished display against the Lilywhites on Saturday.

Andersen, who excelled on loan at Fulham last season, was one of the central defenders reported to be on Fabio Paratici’s radar during the summer transfer window.

Some sources from Denmark even claimed that Spurs were in the driving seat to secure the defender’s signature but the Lilywhites ended up signing Cristian Romero instead, with Andersen completing a move to Palace.

The 25-year-old showed his quality on Saturday as he put in a flawless display to keep the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli quiet for ninety minutes, helping the Eagles to register a thumping 3-0 win against Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

Watching the way Andersen marshalled the Tottenham forwards, some Spurs fans on social media are at a loss to explain why the club did not go in for the Dane.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not surprised that there are these kinds of reactionary takes after such a humiliating loss. However, in reality, it is fair to say that most Spurs fans would have preferred Romero over Andersen if they were given a choice between the two.

Perhaps, we should have signed another centre-back apart from Romero but that was obviously also dependent on other factors including player sales.

Besides, Dier and Sanchez have both started the season in fine form and the result certainly would not have been as bad on Saturday had the two of them played ninety minutes.
