Brennan Johnson was dropped to the bench for tonight’s game against Brentford, but came on in the second half and grabbed a goal. Speaking after the game, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou explained why it may have benefited Johnson to start on the bench.
Despite being in the starting line-up for the last ten matches, Brennan Johnson had to settle for a place on the bench tonight for Spurs, with the return of James Maddison pushing the Welshman out of the first XI.
Johnson made his entrance at half-time, and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact on the game. Finding the perfect spot at the back post, the 22-year-old converted a Timo Werner cross with just his second touch of the game.
That takes his tally this season to two goals and four assists in the Premier League (Transfermarkt), and that goal tonight should go a long way to helping Johnson silence his critics.

Postecoglou happy with decision to bench Brennan Johnson
In his post-match press conference (via Football.London), Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou discussed his decision to bench Johnson, and explained why it may have had a positive impact on the winger.
He said: “I think it probably did Brennan a little bit of good as well, because he’s played a lot for us recently. He could sit and watch the game a bit, maybe get a little bit of a different perspective.
“He was good when he came on, good that he got his goal. And [Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg] helped us at the start of the second half, getting a foothold in the game.”

Hopefully, that goal will make a few people realise that Brennan Johnson is not doing anything wrong at all really for Spurs. He’s working so hard, he’s getting into great areas, and yes, he needs to improve in some aspects of his game, but that can be said of pretty much any player. I am very happy to see him get his goal tonight.
