Peter Crouch issues warning to Harry Kane if he leaves Spurs this summer

Peter Crouch has warned Harry Kane that he risks losing his hero status if he leaves Tottenham this summer, just as Michael Owen did at Liverpool.

The Spurs talisman has been a wanted entity over the last couple of seasons after allegedly expressing his desire to leave the club at the end of last term (Sky Sports).

The news at the time sprung up interest from Manchester City, who launched a mammoth £125 million bid last summer (Fabrizio Romano).

However, the Citizens could not get a deal over the line, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy intent on keeping his prized possession in North London for the foreseeable future.

Crouch has issued his verdict on the situation and suggests Kane may want to think twice about leaving Spurs purely for silverware, as he fears he could lose his hero status as Owen did for Liverpool.

Owen joined bitter rivals Manchester United five years after leaving the Reds and went on to win the Premier League title at Old Trafford, and Crouch believes a similar fate could happen with Kane.

He wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “I always think back to Michael Owen [when a player leaves a club for silverware].

“He went and won things elsewhere but then he isn’t Steven Gerrard when he walks through the doors at Anfield. He could have been.

“Yet the flipside is looking at Robin van Persie or Teddy Sheringham. These guys chose to make their moves to Manchester United and it paid off with league titles.

“If you think I’m going round in circles, imagine what must be going on inside Harry’s head.”

Crouch went on to add that Spurs fans would not blame the England captain for wanting a better shot at winning silverware if he did leave the club.

He added: “Harry will know that for a while he was miles off it. But he has been the best player in the league over the last few weeks. His performances at City and Leeds have been the most enjoyable of anybody’s I’ve watched this season.

“Would Spurs fans begrudge him if he did go the same way as so many other players recently? No, I don’t think they would.

“If he were to leave, then it has to be a top club certain to win silverware and we will see whether City go back there or continue with their pursuit of Erling Haaland.

“Leaving for silverware, rather than money, would not burn bridges. I do still think City need him. Those big moments in Europe where you need to rely on a killer. That could be the difference.”

The Kane debate will continue to roll on and only increase as the summer transfer window approaches. It is fair that Kane wants silverware, but at the same time he is the key for the club on their quest for achieving that, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Spurs fight to keep hold of him again.
