Phil Thompson on which Spurs players would get into the Liverpool team

Tottenham Hotspur face a tough trip to Anfield tomorrow afternoon in what will be the first time they have squared off against Liverpool since the Champions League final.

While Liverpool are still unbeaten in the Premier League this season having only dropped two points following the draw against Manchester United last weekend, Spurs are already thirteen points behind the Reds after just nine games played.

Anfield has not been a happy hunting ground for Spurs and are winless in their last eight away league games against Liverpool (D3 L5), last winning at Anfield in May 2011 (2-0), thanks to goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Luka Modric.

Tottenham confirmed an almost clean bill of health for the match with just Hugo Lloris sidelined with a dislocated elbow.

Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson was asked ahead of the game which Spurs players would get into Liverpool team.

The former Liverpool defender suggested that only Harry Kane would come into consideration but also claimed that Roberto Firmino is his favourite player in Jurgen Klopp’s team.

He told Sporting Life: “You would have to think of Harry Kane. The amount of goals he has scored, so consistently over the years, would put him on anyone’s radar, but Roberto Firmino is also my favourite player in the Liverpool side.

“Kane is an out-and-out goalscorer, but a team player and a leader too, setting him above most centre-forwards in Europe.

“I am trying to think of the midfield players, and there is not a lot I would change – perhaps the players behind the front lines for both sides are not as creative as you would like, but all of them do a job for their teams.”

Opinion

Kane would walk into any side in world football, Liverpool included. At his peak, you would also suggest Christian Eriksen would have a chance given Liverpool’s lack of a playmaker.

Also, Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen are good enough to partner Virgil van Dijk.
