Photo: Toby Alderweireld hints when he will return to Tottenham

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld’s future has been subject to a lot of speculation in recent weeks and months after the club took up the option to extend his contract until next summer which activated a transfer release clause which runs up until the final two weeks of the current window (Guardian).

Recent reports suggest that Tottenham are in discussions with Serie A club AS Roma regarding a deal involving the Belgian going to the Italian capital with Nicolo Zaniolo coming the other way.

Corriere dello Sport reported two days ago that Spurs had made an offer of £21m plus Toby Alderweireld to Roma for Zaniolo’s services. So there were fears among some fans, which I include myself as part of that perhaps we had seen the last of Alderweireld in a Tottenham shirt.

However, the Belgian international revealed in his latest social media post he does plan on meeting up with the squad for pre-season shortly.

In an Instagram video story which was posted on his own account on 8/7/19; he shared footage of his work out. The 30-year-old had a clock counting down the days, hours and minutes until his pre-season training starts later this week.

We hope that the club decides to hold on to Alderweireld for at least one more season, and concentrates instead on improving other areas of the squad this summer that are under more in more immediate need of strengthening.

In our opinion, his inclusion of a countdown timer indicates that the defender doesn’t expect to move imminently and will training with the squad in the next few days.
