“I can hardly play without him” Alderweireld praise for Vertonghen

Toby Alderweireld has said that he can’t imagine playing without club team-mate and fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen, who also played at Ajax together, have formed a formidable partnership at Spurs, perhaps the most reliable in England since Toby arrived from Atletico Madrid in 2015 having previously played on loan at Southampton.

Super Jan will break Jan Ceulemans’ Belgium appearance record when, and in all likelihood, he wins his 97th cap, which could happen in the World Cup qualifier with Cyprus this coming Tuesday. Alderweireld hopes that he and Vertonghen remain partners for many years to come.

“Over the years we have grown into one another and really become close. “I can hardly play without him. If I ever go to another club, he will have to go with me.”

Alderweireld was also asked to compare the two in-form forwards he plays with in the national side and club side namely Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku. The centre-back found it too difficult to pick the superior striker when asked to.“I’ll put them on the same level,” he said.

The contract “saga” continues to rumble on with no real concrete answers as to why the talented centre half hasn’t put pen to paper. However maybe Vertonghen can persuade him.

What do you guys think, will we see Pochettino’s arm around Toby soon?, or is it likely to continue to rumble on until after the 2018 World Cup at least? Let us have your thoughts on the situation.
