Player admits he could have retired at Spurs had an exciting offer not come in for him

Hugo Lloris has revealed that retiring from the game was an option for him if he had not received the right kind of offer but admitted that he was delighted when the opportunity opened up to join Los Angeles FC.

Even though Lloris’ final year or so at Tottenham did not go according to plan, with the goalkeeper being relegated to third choice during his first six months at the club, he will be remembered fondly by Spurs fans, having sealed his status as one of the club’s biggest modern-day legends.

The former Tottenham captain now holds the record for the most Premier League appearances for the Lilywhites and is undoubtedly the most reliable number one the club has had in recent decades.

Many were surprised when Lloris ended up staying put at Hotspur Way last summer after Ange Postecoglou had made it clear that the Frenchman would not be part of his plans.

Hugo Lloris could have retired at Tottenham

The World Cup winner has now shed light on his decision to wait for the right offer, remarking that he is now extremely motivated to help LAFC accomplish their objectives.

When Lloris was asked if retirement was an option, he told LEquipe: “I didn’t want to stop, but if I hadn’t had the opportunity that matched my criteria, it could have happened.

“Things work out in the end. I was right to turn down a few shaky offers last summer. When LAFC approached me at the beginning of December, the flame was quickly rekindled.

“I couldn’t have found anything better than this competitive football, because the club wants the MLS title while retaining a human face. Football takes you on a journey. I feel privileged to do it in these conditions.”

Hugo was never really likely to consider offers to move to the Middle East nor was he likely to accept a number two role at any top club, given that he only has a couple of years of football left in him. So, the option to move to Los Angeles was the perfect one for him and his family.
