PLAYER RATINGS: Tottenham 5-1 Sunderland

Hugo Lloris – Helpless for the goal due to Chiriches’ error and hardly touched the ball otherwise.

Kyle Naughton – A very impressive performance from Naughton, with a particular highlight coming in the second half when he won the ball deep in our half before launching a counter-attack with a superb pass to Eriksen.

Younes Kaboul – Shaky in the first half and rarely busied in the second: did display leadership and commitment, and his evident delight whenever Spurs scored was laudable.

Vlad Chiriches – Great to have the Romanian back after his early season form, but did gift Sunderland their goal. Comfortable on the ball otherwise.

Danny Rose – Shoddy in defence and wasteful in attack. Replacement please.

Aaron Lennon – Showed intent and provided a spark; eager to make runs in-behind Marcos Alonso. Unfortunately, final ball lacking on the whole.

Paulinho – Assured in possession and useful in linking up in attack; a good return to the side for the Brazilian.

Nacer Chadli – Showed glimpses of promise and is evidently comfortable on the ball but he didn’t add too much to proceedings tonight.

Christian Eriksen – Excellent performance. 2 majestic crosses for the first 2 goals and a decent finish for his deserved goal.

Emmanuel Adebayor – Popped up everywhere on the pitch through his keenness to pick up the ball and make something happen. Perhaps the easiest brace he will ever score, but finding the net must not be scoffed at.

Harry Kane – Very good performance and a deserved goal. Made intelligent runs to create a number of goal-scoring opportunities for himself to ensure that a first Premier League start for Tottenham was a successful one.

Substitutes

Gylfi Sigurdsson – Found the net in second-half injury time for the second time in successive home games to put the icing on the cake.

Andros Townsend – Kept the ball in the corner as the game drew to a close.

Milos Veljkovic – Didn’t learn too much about him from this cameo but it is great to see a youth team player make his debut for the first team. He is very highly rated and hopefully his time will come in subsequent seasons.

  1. Well done Tim. I for one would stick with you next year. A few of your own players in the summer and I’m sure we’d have a good season next year.

If I was Tim though I would get as far away from Desperate Dan as possible, I am sure lots of offers will come in from clubs who stick up for their managers.

  2. ACCIDENTLY WE MAY HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER TO OUR LACK OF GOALS.ADE,KANE,AND ZIGGY ARE QUITE DIFFERENT PLAYERS.COMBINED WE HAVE A GREAT ATTACK.WITH ERIKSEN BEHIND,ITS 4 GOAL SCORERS.BOTH FULLBACKS NEED REPLACING AND THE INVISIBLE MAN CHADLI.CHIRICHES GAVE AWAY THE GOAL,BUT HES FRESH FROM INJURY AND IS MOST LIKELY RUSTY.TIM IS OUT OF HIS DEPTH AND SHOULD LEARN TO THINK BEFORE HE SPEAKS.IN A RACE OF BRAIN V MOUTH ,THE MOUTH ALWAYS SEEMS TO WIN.

  3. against a top side the error by chiri could have been catastrophic but apart from that he played really well i dont understand why lloris didnt just clear it up field still there you go , what a snip at 11m our young superstar eriksen was majestic and ran the show and how much more solid without the inexperience of bentaleb in the midfield we were yes i know it was against the bottom club but look how liverpool struggled v sunderland and were lucky winners , i have written a few times on here and as tottspur on vs ref how rose should never put on a spurs shirt again he is just not good enough for us play fryers instead , i would give paulinho a 7 out of 10 he worked hard and did his job and got into the box to add more to our attacks with more game time he ll be fine , what a waiste of 7m chadli has turned out to be why dim sum picks him every game is beyond me he didnt do anything or influence the game at all , naughton was better but still well below spurs quality, kane really worked hard but he also isnt a striker of quality missed at least 3 goal chances and can be selfish , its such a shame lennons final ball lets him down he always helps defence and scares the s— out of defenders with his runs just spend loads of practice aaron on your xs and cut backs please ,ade was fine again , so there you have it ladies and gentlemen , finally hope the news that dim sum is being moved out is true shame its not NOW coys

  4. Agree with Tony. Lets get things in perspective here. This was probably the worst premiership opponents seen here for many a year. I probably think Barnet would have smashed them so lets just be thankful we won. Cant understand what good Chadli is as a holding player, Eriksen again wide left and a player so out of form in Lennon, starting in front of Townsend (not that I'm a fan of the latter). Does seem a little strange that 3 of the players 'mentioned in the fracas of Anfield' didn't feature at all last night, with only one of them on the bench ???

  5. I think most of the improvement was down to Paulinho who is much more mobile and offers much more in the final third than Bentaleb. (I don't hate Bentelab, I think he's a promising young player but that's a long way short of 'first name on the team sheet' which is how he has been treated recently).
There's still the issue of Eriksen and Chadli playing in each other's positions. Chadli isn't a central midfielder: he was bought to play wide left and he should start there. Against better opposition than Sunderland Eriksen's defensive weakness on the left will be exposed, as it was for Liverpool's first goal. Put him in the number 10 playmaker role.
Sandro and Paulinho as holding midfielders, Townsend and Chadli either side of Eriksen is surely the way to go.

  6. Oh please stop! For the first 45 min last night if we were playing any other team in the top half of the table, that game would have been well and truly over. Here we go again, for years this is what we do if we get a result against any team we are so forgiving and BLIND!!! Are we about to paper over the cracks again for another season?????? If anybody thought that was a great result last night then they are deluded. The tension and nervousness that was in the ground last night for 75min was palpable and yes I was there, AGAIN!!!!

    • There are mitigating circumstances yes, Sunderland are bad yes, but in an individual game all you can do is beat what is in front of you and we did that extremely convincingly.

  7. For me Chadli appeared to be comfortable in that position. Great improvement, accurate passing this time. Hope it continues.

  8. I like Chadli a lot. He’s versatile as a number ten or eleven though with Eriksen made for number ten Chadli should play left side and Eriksen behind strikers in the middle. Chadli is stronger whereas Eriksen is weakest as a defending midfielder. I feel Lennon has been poor too often and should be dropped. Ciriches looks like a real footballer and Naughton is starting to adapt much better as a right full back. Rose will never be a left full back and he’s essentially been converted from a being a winger. Paulinho makes a positive difference in the middle and I don’t envisage Kane or Bentaleb establishing themselves in the first eleven at Tottenham. Sherwood might have other ideas of course? Adebayor has been fantastic.

  9. I like Chadli but he and Eriksen should swap positions for better team management. I don't expect Rose, a winger, to ever become a full back. Naughton is starting to learn and adapt better as right full back. Lennon has been too poor too long and should have been dropped long ago. Kane will never set the world alight as a striker and Paulinho looked really good. Ciriches is a fine player and so si kaboul. Adebayor has been fantastic.

  10. Am I the only one who saw Kabul make a mistake not running for the Chiricheses ball? He's a defender and should not wait for lloris or any other player to clear the ball in defense.
