Player Spurs sold this summer is scoring nearly a goal a game at new club

Former Tottenham Hotspur attacker Steven Bergwijn is currently in great goalscoring form for his new club Ajax, registering nearly a goal a game for the Dutch side.

Bergwijn joined Spurs in January 2020, but never really found his feet in North London. He scored eight goals and contributed ten assists in 83 appearances for the club (Transfermarkt).

He did, however, produce some huge moments during that time. Last season’s dramatic winner to complete the comeback against Leicester City in a 3-2 win, and a goal on his debut against Manchester City come to mind.

Bergwijn never managed to cement his place in Antonio Conte’s system and often found himself struggling for game time. With the arrivals of Dejan Kulusevski in January, and Richarlison in the summer, it became clear that Bergwijn’s time at Spurs was up.

The Netherlands winger was eventually sold to Ajax this summer in a deal reported to be worth £26.4 million (Sky Sports).

Bergwijn has impressed since making the move back to the Eredivisie though, and is finally showing what Spurs could have had if they had given him a consistent run in the team.

He has now registered eight goals in ten games across all competitions this season (Transfermarkt). It’s incredible to think that’s the same number of goals he scored for Spurs in a whole two and a half years.

With six league goals in 544 minutes of game time, Bergwijn is averaging a goal every 90 minutes in the Eredivisie. Obviously, there is a great gulf in quality between the Dutch league and the English top flight, but it’s impressive nonetheless.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s nice to see Bergwijn flourishing with his new club. You get the feeling he was the kind of player who needed the confidence and consistency of a solid run in the team, and he just never managed to get that at Spurs for one reason or another.

Of course, these stats need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Not only is it the honeymoon period for Bergwijn at his new club, but the Dutch league is far less competitive than the Premier League.
