Poch admits he cannot explain why Spurs struggled against Colchester

While the draw against Olympiacos followed by the defeat against Leicester City already had alarm bells ringing, being knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester United was a new low for the side.

While Tottenham have displayed an uncharacteristic lack of solidity at the back by having kept only one clean sheet all season, the defeat to Colchester also pointed to the team’s troubles in creating chances in the final third.

Right from the opening game against Aston Villa, Pochettino’s men have found it extremely hard to break down teams who defend deep and despite experimenting with different combinations upfront, the Argentine has not been able to fix the problem.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference ahead of Spurs’ home game against Southampton today, Pochettino has admitted he could not explain why the team failed to make their domination count against Colchester.

Speaking about the League Cup tie, the Argentine told Football.London, “We didn’t find a way to score, I think in some places we missed the quality in the last pass, in the shot.

“It is not easy to accept that when you play against a League Two team and you dominate the game and you have the possession and you have the players you have on the pitch, you don’t score a goal.

“When you finish with Son, Eriksen, Dele Alli, Lucas Moura – okay I accept maybe I was wrong – but I really believe with this team on the pitch you can win.

“But it wasn’t like this and sometimes in football you cannot find an explanation. One you watch three or four times and still you cannot explain why.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the fragility that Spurs have displayed at the back this season as well as the difficulty they have had in holding on to leads, it is vitally important that the Lilywhites click going forward in order to take the pressure off the back line. A comfortable win over Southampton will help the players get some of their confidence back.
