Poch explains why anything Spurs achieve in Europe this season will be a bonus

Tottenham Hotspur came extremely close to being knocked out of this season’s Champions League in the group stages.

Spurs had picked up just one point from their first three group matches and found themselves trailing 1-0 to PSV with 10 minutes to go on match day four.

However, Tottenham managed to turn that game around in the final 10 minutes, then went on to beat Inter Milan at Wembley and gain a vital point in their final group game at the Camp Nou to somehow qualify for the knockout stages against all odds.

Pochettino was asked that given that Spurs were all but written off after their first three games in this year’s competition if anything they achieve from this point on would be a bonus.

The Argentine said that just competing with the top 16 clubs in Europe was a bonus for the club given where they were when he took over four-and-a-half years ago.

The 46-year-old, however, insisted that Spurs are going to give everything to progress to the next round.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Pochettino told Football.London, “Yes, for me, to play in the Champions League with Tottenham is a massive bonus.

“To play in the Champions League three years in a row, competing with big sides, like how we’re competing in the last four years in the Premier League to qualify another year for the Champions League is a massive bonus.

“No-one expected us five years ago to be in that position. We’re going to try to win and be in the next stage of the Champions League but of course, that is a bonus.”
