Poch hints at future Alderweireld announcement

The saga of Toby Alderweireld was back page news for almost the entire summer transfer window this year, as the central defender was linked with a move away to Premier League rivals Manchester United.

However, Toby ended up staying in North London and has since claimed that he never wanted to leave Tottenham in the first place, labelling the reports as false.

Alderweireld now enters the final year of his contract at Spurs, with an option to extend it for a further year.

If Tottenham do choose to extend, it will activate a clause in the contract stating that Alderweireld can leave for just £25m during one particular week of the summer transfer window.

While many Spurs fans had accepted that this would probably be the Belgian’s final year at Tottenham, rumours are now circulating that the centre-back may sign a new deal in the coming months.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has refused to rule out such a move: “Look, when in England the transfer window closed and in Europe closed I think we move on.

“Then like always I told you, I never talk about situations, that maybe yes or maybe no, the club is dealing or working.

“In that situation it’s not my job to talk about individual situations.

“I think it’s so clear, not only in his case, in all the players that have different situations, we are so clear, the club is so clear, when something happens we are going to communicate the news as soon as possible.

“I am not going to talk about individual things. It’s not going to help anyone.”
