Mauricio Pochettino insists new contract for Spurs star is not down to him

Tottenham Hotspur managed to see out an important win at the weekend against Southampton and that was largely down to the defensive partnership of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian duo defended for their lives as Southampton peppered the Spurs box with crosses and shots for the entirety of the second half at the new White Hart Lane.

However, both players currently have well under one year remaining on their current contracts, meaning that they are set to leave on a free in the summer of 2020.

Both can also talk to non-English clubs as early as January about signing a pre-contract agreement ahead of a summer move.

Mauricio Pochettino has now revealed that he would be open to a new Vertonghen contract, but it is between the player, his agent, and the club.

He did insist that Vertonghen is a part of his project and that feeling will never change for the Spurs boss.

Poch said (Jonathan Veal): “I am open to everything, but that is a dealing between the club, him and his agent. Let’s see what happens. Jan is always an important part of my project. That feeling isn’t going to change.”
