Poch reveals why first-team star has been training alone in pre-season

Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season is now well underway, with the majority of the first-team jetting off to Singapore for the first match in the tour of Asia.

Spurs take on Juventus on July 21 in Singapore before travelling to Shanghai for a match against Prem rivals, Man United.

Pochettino decided to name Christian Eriksen in his pre-season squad, despite rumours of the attacking midfielder leaving the club (Sun). The Great Dane has just one year remaining on his current contract, leaving Spurs with a decision to make.

The last thing the Lilywhites will want is for Eriksen to leave on a free next year, so if they can’t agree a new deal, a sale may be the only option.

Pochettino was asked why Eriksen has been training alone in his press conference today, with some maybe assuming it was to do with his comments on his desire to leave the club (Ekstra Bladet).

However, Poch has now revealed that Eriksen underwent minor surgery after the Champions League final, hence why he has been training alone at his own pace.

Poch said (Football London): “It’s difficult for me to talk about the comments of the player. To be honest, on my holidays I didn’t want to listen to the media. Christian is here because he expects to play. He had minor surgery after the final, similar to Ben Davies, that’s why he trained alone. We gave him the option to stay in London but there was the chance for him to play.”
