Poch says Watford win has made this vital change

Tottenham came into the game against Watford on the back of being knocked out from the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup within a space of four days. This meant that Tottenham’s wait for a first trophy under the Argentine was set to continue for the moment.

The Argentine himself came under a lot of criticism for his team selection for the FA Cup game against Crystal Palace as he chose to make 7 changes on top of the injury crisis Spurs were going through.

After the game, Pochettino insisted that he was proud of his team, and controversially even claimed that finishing in the top 4 was more important than winning a trophy, a remark that attracted even more criticism both from pundits as well as some Spurs fans.

Until the 80th minute mark against Watford, it looked like Tottenham’s and Pochettino’s recent misery was set to continue as the home side found themselves a goal down and unable to a breakthrough. However, thankfully that changed thanks to a left foot strike by a returning Heung-Min Son and a fantastic header from Fernando Llorente.

Pochettino admitted after the game that the win was so important given the negativity surrounding the club in recent days. Speaking in the post-match press conference, the Argentine told Football.London, “It was important for us to, after a difficult week, to smile again. ”

“After 90 minutes it was so important. With all the circumstances I think finishing in that way after 90 minutes is a fantastic way to end that negativity that was around in the last few days.”

“How it changes things when you get a victory like today, you are for sure more optimistic and people see things differently to yesterday.”
