Pochettino asked whether Eriksen has played his final game for Spurs

One of Tottenham’s biggest problems from last season was the fact that they lost far too many games, and the initial signs are not looking good for the new campaign.

Spurs barely competed at home to Newcastle today, whimpering to a 1-0 defeat against the Magpies, questioning whether the Lilywhites have what it takes to win a title.

Pochettino decided to leave Christian Eriksen on the bench once again today, just as he did in the opening match against Aston Villa.

On game week one, the Dane came off the bench to change the game, however, on this occasion, he was unable to inspire a Tottenham goal.

There are now around seven days until the European transfer window closes on September 2 and Spurs fans will be hoping to hang onto their star players, such as Eriksen.

Pochettino was asked after the Newcastle defeat if Eriksen has now played his final match for the club.

He said (Football London): “I don’t know. I don’t know. Why you ask me? Maybe you know something. It’s so difficult, the situation. We cannot blame one party or another. That is the situation, the circumstances. We arrive today with different players and different situations in the squad but I don’t want to justify our performance because of that. I want to make clear the point. When you play football and are on the pitch you don’t think about these situations.

“Of course the problem is during the week, when you arrive at the competition maybe it can affect but I think we should with a bit more today be winning. This type of stuff happens in the Premier League and that’s why you not only need quality players, you need a very good dynamic, and strong team bond and at the moment that situation in our group is still far far away from what we expect.”
