Tottenham Hotspur went into last night’s game against German League leaders Borussia Dortmund without Harry Kane or Dele Alli, but came out with a three goal lead in the tie.
Spurs started the game pretty flat, and struggled to create much in the first half. However, come the second 45, it was a different story as Tottenham ran rampant against the Germans.
A heroic performance from Jan Vertonghen saw the Belgian set up Son’s opener, before doubling Spurs’ lead himself.
Fernando Llorente then came off the bench to add a third, sending Tottenham to dream land.
Of course, this is only half time in the grand scheme of the two legs, but it puts Spurs in a healthy position to qualify for the quarter finals, their joint best record in their history.
Mauricio Pochettino believes the 3-0 win has made a statement that his side can beat anyone in the Champions League this season.
When asked this fact, he responded (Football London): “For me, of course, I’m happy. I want to congratulate the players one more time on a massive performance and effort. It’s only the first leg, the first half of the tie. Of course 3-0 is a very good result but when you have in front a team like Dortmund you always need to respect them. We need to go to Dortmund with the idea to win. Of course we’re happy now but a little bit… of course it was a very good result but there’s a lot of work to do.”
