Pochettino clarifies past comments and doesn’t seem to rule out January signings

Tottenham Hotspur made four signings this summer, as Pochettino and Levy introduced Jack Clarke, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, and Ryan Sessegnon to the squad.

Jack Clarke went back out on loan to Leeds United, Ryan Sessegnon has yet to appear for the Lilywhites due to injury, and Giovani Lo Celso picked up a knock just three appearances into his Spurs career.

After nearly 18 months without a signing prior to these four, the only meaningful addition Pochettino has been able to make to his squad in two years in Tanguy Ndombele.

While the Frenchman has settled beautifully, even he has missed games through injury and is only essentially replacing the void left by Mousa Dembele.

It seems as if the Tottenham squad may still be lacking some new faces to freshen it up, but Pochettino claimed yesterday in a press conference that he did not believe January signings would be made (Guardian).

The Argentine seems to have now clarified these statements and did not rule signings out.

He said (Football London): “I never was keen on January and I will not change now because it is a tough period or tough few games,” he said on Thursday.

“Now I’m going to change my way to think or see things? For me, the most important thing is to try and stay together. Of course after the windows some circumstances you can manage, a situation can arise in December or January and you need to take some decisions but we are not going to force anything because we believe the squad is a decent squad, now we need to be strong

“Our decision was right, because we are suffering a storm now we cannot now change quickly.”

On the summer rebuild and if it went as planned, he added: “That was in the past,” he said. “Now is not the time to talk about that. Now it’s the time to be responsible. First me and then the players, everyone. Now is not a point to talk about January, refreshing the team.

“Now is about trying to find solutions because we need to win on Saturday and we need to win after that. We need solutions now. We cannot think ‘ok, we forget now and in January we are going to fix the problem.’ It’s not like this.

“My opinion, the way I love to work, is that when you take decisions in the summer and then you need to be responsible and then you need to find the way to make that work. For me, that’s it.

“I am not talking about January with anyone. I told the players that for me, January is too far away. Because they know me, after five and a half years, that all the rumours and all the opinion, of course, we need to respect all and we respect all, but what is going to happen sometimes is the complete opposite to what people are saying, or what appears on social media.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I just hope and pray that Spurs do make some signings in January, because this is no longer looking like a top-four side that is on the verge of challenging for trophies. It needs a lift, and soon!
