Tottenham Hotspur will make history tomorrow evening when they take part in their first ever Champions League final in Madrid.

Spurs have battled back from the jaws of an exit from the competition at the group stage on more than one occasion and have also faced the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax to book their place in the European showpiece where they will face Liverpool.

However, there are some in the media who have claimed that Spurs do not deserve to be in the final. Former Liverpool player and manager, Graeme Souness has openly shared his view that the North London outfit should not be there and have been ‘fortunate’ and tried to further his claim by claiming barely any of their side would get into the Liverpool team (balls.ie).

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has hit back at the doubters by insisting that his side have made the final on their own merits.

He told Marca: “I laugh at many of the things that were said at the time. I don’t know what it means to reach the final by luck. We have been superior to Manchester City. If [Sergio] Aguero’s goal is offside, it’s offside and that’s it. There is nothing more, although some want to sell it differently. In the semi-final too [Ajax] were better only in the first 30 minutes of both games. In the rest of the tie, no.”

Spurs have made their own luck in the tournament through hard work and determination.  Hopefully they will lift the trophy on Saturday and the likes of Souness will go back under their rock.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. One would NOT expect Souness to say any different. IF Spurs win on Saturday…then it would shut his mouth, wouldn’t it? OR maybe NOT, as he would say Spurs were “lucky”.

I like going into the final as underdogs.

  2. To be fair to Souness he’s usually very pro Tottenham so I’ll let this slide. Any of our CB’s would get into their team alongside Van Dyke. Unless you’re a complete idiot in denial, Kane walks into any team he chooses and Liverpool, since losing Coutinho don’t have an Eriksen type player. He’d also rather have Shaqiri than Son would he?

    • Hahaha . No! . Graeme Souness is not usually very pro Spurs. It is well known that he has a big chip on his shoulder regarding Spurs, having been released from the club as a youth. One of Bill Nicholson’s few mistakes it must be said. I like Graeme actually, but hope we shut him up tomorrow!

  3. I wouldn’t let it slide. Souness turned his back on spurs before he joined liverpool. And now he continues to wear his liverpool tinted glasses. That I can deal with but to suggest any team doesnt deserve to be where they are in any tournament ……is extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. It’s a comment that shows his fear……and really he is old enough to know better as it will only strengthen the other teams resolve. And if he is that stupid ….when he is 60 or 70….then there is no hope for him
