Pochettino hits back at the likes of Souness who claim ‘lucky’ Spurs should not be in final

Tottenham Hotspur will make history tomorrow evening when they take part in their first ever Champions League final in Madrid.

Spurs have battled back from the jaws of an exit from the competition at the group stage on more than one occasion and have also faced the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Ajax to book their place in the European showpiece where they will face Liverpool.

However, there are some in the media who have claimed that Spurs do not deserve to be in the final. Former Liverpool player and manager, Graeme Souness has openly shared his view that the North London outfit should not be there and have been ‘fortunate’ and tried to further his claim by claiming barely any of their side would get into the Liverpool team (balls.ie).

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has hit back at the doubters by insisting that his side have made the final on their own merits.

He told Marca: “I laugh at many of the things that were said at the time. I don’t know what it means to reach the final by luck. We have been superior to Manchester City. If [Sergio] Aguero’s goal is offside, it’s offside and that’s it. There is nothing more, although some want to sell it differently. In the semi-final too [Ajax] were better only in the first 30 minutes of both games. In the rest of the tie, no.”

Opinion

Spurs have made their own luck in the tournament through hard work and determination. Hopefully they will lift the trophy on Saturday and the likes of Souness will go back under their rock.
