Pochettino insists top four finish is ‘still possible’ for Spurs

Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that Tottenham can still finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League for the fifth straight season despite the poor start they have made to the season.

Tottenham find themselves in the eleventh place in the table going into the game against Sheffield United and a win today could see them climb to as high as sixth place displacing this afternoon’s opponents.

Speaking ahead of the game Pochettino admitted that problems behind the scenes had affected the team but insisted that things were now improving. He compared the situation this season to the time when he arrived at the club and claimed that the most important thing at the moment is to remain calm.

The 47-year-old told the Guardian, “We went back to five years ago where we were like this in terms of position, situations and stuff like that, so it takes time.

“We cannot move the club forward quick, we cannot accelerate the time – that’s the problem. It’s a natural process. We only need to stay calm and work hard because there is not another way to change this dynamic. It’s different to five years ago but with a lot of similarities.”

“It’s difficult to talk now because I don’t want to be talking about negative things,” he said. “I promise you if all goes well, I will explain for you. I want to be positive because the signals in the last few weeks have been positive.”

Despite Tottenham’s poor run of form, the Argentine suggested that it is too early to rule out a top four finish for Spurs this season.

Pochettino added, “When you assess all the circumstances, it’s normal to be in the position we are. We’ll see [about the top four]. Today, it’s so early.

“If we are capable of finding the right balance to start performing in the way we expect, it’s still possible.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Given how competitive this season has been with every team apart from Liverpool and Manchester City capable of beating each other on their day. So ruling out a top four finish at this time will be quite short-sighted as we will likely see several more twists and turns. However, it is important to start winning and putting a run together starting with the game against Sheffield United this afternoon.
