Pochettino jokes how Kane was a ‘disaster’ in one situation back in 2014

Mauricio Pochettino has joked that Harry Kane is capable of playing in any position across the pitch, except as a goalkeeper, pointing out that the striker was a disaster in between the sticks against Asteras Tripolis back in 2014.

Kane has not yet found the back of the net this World Cup but he has certainly shown his quality in the final third, sitting at the top of the assists charts with three to his name so far.

However, the Tottenham man has been criticised by some pundits for dropping too deep and not looking to run beyond the opposition’s backline (The Sun).

Pochettino has brushed aside that criticism, insisting that the 29-year-old is more than just a goal scorer, backing him to come up with decisive goals in the knockout stages.

The Argentine joked that the only position Kane cannot play is in goal, referring to the time that the Tottenham man took over the gloves in 2014 for the final few minutes of a Europa League encounter after Hugo Lloris was sent off.

Kane had scored a hat-trick in that game against Asteras Tripolis but was unable to save a free-kick that was hit straight at him in the latter stages of the game when he was in goal.

Pochettino told Sky Sports Football Daily about the moment in 2014: “He’s (Kane) capable of everything.

“Full-back, centre-back, midfielder, offensive. Goalkeeper? No. I remember that UEFA Cup game, he was a disaster. We conceded a goal and he made a mistake. A goalkeeper, no but any other position, yes.”

It is ironic that the same section of fans who accuse Kane of ‘stat padding’ when he scores goals are now criticising him for his lack of goals, despite the Tottenham man leading the pack for assists at the World Cup.

That shows that their criticism of the striker is due to the hatred borne out of tribal club loyalties and that they will continue to bring him down as long as he plays for Spurs.
