Report: Pochettino names first player he wanted to sign as Tottenham boss

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told Yonhap News Agency that he is not surprised at how Heung-min Son has developed as a footballer and claims he is one of the best attackers in world football.

Pochettino brought Son to Tottenham back in 2015, and the rest is history as they say. Son has 136 goals in 344 appearances for the North London side (Transfermarkt) and is now eighth on the list of the club’s all-time top goalscorers (MyFootballFacts).

This year, the South Korean star has struggled to recapture the form that saw him win the Premier League Golden Boot award last season, with just five goals and two assists in 19 games this term (Transfermarkt).

Nevertheless, Son’s incredible ability has seen him become a fan favourite both for Tottenham and his country. Indeed, Son is considered a superstar in South Korea and is currently captaining his side at the 2022 World Cup.

The 30-year-old is rated as one of the best attackers in the sport, and former manager Pochettino thinks that praise is very much deserved, and the way Son’s reputation has grown does not surprise the man who brought him to the Premier League.

Pochettino reflected on watching Son and making the move to sign him in 2015 and said: “We saw the potential of him and the evolution was fantastic.

“He deserves the credit. Today, he’s one of the best offensive players in the world.”

Yonhap report that Pochettino revealed Son was the first player he wanted to sign for Tottenham, and continued to monitor him even after failing to lure him away from Germany at first.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Sonny might not be having the best of times this season, his quality is still there to see, albeit in glimpses. Hopefully, he can come back from the World Cup and get back to the heights of last season, but regardless, his contribution to the team is, and always has been, phenomenal and he will go down as a club legend for sure.
