Pochettino on whether Jan Vertonghen is okay to play against Ajax

Tottenham Hotspur take on Ajax in Amsterdam at around this time tomorrow night, as they look to overturn a 1-0 deficit to qualify for the Champions League final.

This is Spurs’ first ever semi-final in the competition, but they failed to get off to the ideal start after conceding an away goal in the first leg.

Tottenham must now score at least one at Ajax and win the game to stand any chance of progressing.

However, there is some good news for Spurs fans ahead of the Wednesday night fixture, as Jan Vertonghen is available after being rested against Bournemouth.

Vertonghen suffered a nasty blow to the head and withdrew from the home leg of the semi-final with dizziness and nausea.

Pochettino has now confirmed that he is available to play, although he will need a mask to protect his nose after sustaining a cut in the collision.

Poch said (Football London): “Yes he didn’t suffer more than a cut on his nose. It was no more than that. A lot of players keep on playing in the same situation. It wasn’t a big issue and it’s not a big issue if he’s fit and we give him the opportunity to play. It’s not a problem. I think he will need a mask but it’s not a big issue.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

This is great news for Tottenham, as they must remain defensively solid, as well as scoring goals, if they are to progress through to the final to face Liverpool or Barcelona. Jan Vertonghen has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent players yet again this season, and they always look stronger with him and Toby partnering at the back.
