Pochettino on whether Spurs can catch Man City this season

While Tottenham put in incredible performances to reach the finals of the Champions League last season, their performances in the Premier League towards the end of the season left a lot to be desired.

In fact, despite looking like they had a shot at the Premier League title until February, Mauricio Pochettino’s finished a massive 26 points behind Manchester City and barely managed to squeeze into the Champions League spots last season.

Tottenham have strengthened considerably this summer with the acquisitions of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon, in an effort to close the gap with Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the table.

When asked ahead of the game against Man City, if Spurs can catch the League Champions, Mauricio Pochettino insisted that the players are only focussed on improving on their showing last season and aren’t thinking about finishing above City.

Speaking to Football.London, the Argentine said, “We are going to fight again this season against ourselves to try to improve our balance.

“If we analyse the last five years we always improve every season in different things but in the Premier League I think we decrease in our performance or in the points we got.

“That is our challenge, to improve ourselves. To improve our numbers in the Premier League. Of course in Europe we have improved and become more competitive and got to the final of the Champions League.

“In the Premier League we decrease and that is the point today that we want to improve and to try to reduce the distance to City and Liverpool who were the two best teams in the Premier League.

“For us it’s our challenge. First of all our challenge is to, rather than compete with them, is to improve ourselves.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Although Pochettino seems reluctant to publically admit that Tottenham are title contenders in order to avoid putting pressure on the squad, there is no doubt that internally he is probably got the squad believing that they can win the league. The game against City will give us a better idea of how far away Spurs are from City.
