Pochettino on why Lloris’ quality cannot be doubted

Tottenham overcame Leicester City 3-1 at Wembley yesterday afternoon to ensure that they remain in the hunt for the Premier League title.

The result certainly didn’t tell the whole story of the game as Leicester pushed Spurs right until the very end.

Unlike the likes of Watford and Newcastle before them, the Foxes weren’t afraid to commit players in attack and squandered a number of chances. It was only Hugo Lloris’ brilliant reflexes that stopped them from taking the lead.

In the second half, with Spurs leading 1-0, Leicester were awarded a penalty after Vertonghen’s challenge on James Maddison was deemed to have been a foul by referee Michael Oliver.

However, Tottenham’s skipper saved Jamie Vardy’s spot-kick in what was a crucial moment in the game, as Spurs went on to score their second just minutes later through Christian Eriksen.

Lloris has come in for a fair bit of criticism this year after making several poor mistakes. There have even been calls from some Spurs fans for Paulo Gazzaniga to replace the Frenchman as Tottenham’s number 1.

The 32-year-old’s performance against Leicester served as a timely reminder of what he was capable of. Speaking after the Pochettino insisted that the Frenchman’s quality cannot be doubted.

Speaking to Football.London, the Argentine said: “I think we are talking about one of the best keepers in the world, with a lot of experience and having played a lot of games here at Tottenham.

“I think he’s showing his value and of course in the decisive moments like today I think it was so important to help the team achieve the three points. Of course his quality is there and we cannot doubt that.”
