Tottenham beat Newcastle United with a late goal to move to the second spot in the table ahead of Manchester City, and just four points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Both Man City and Liverpool have a game in hand, with the City welcoming Arsenal this evennig and Liverpool traveling to West Ham tomorrow night.

However, there is no doubting that Spurs cannot be ruled out of the title race just yet, having secured 19 wins in 25 matches so far, making Tottenham’s current point tally the highest they have ever had at this point of a Premier League season.

Speaking after the game, Pochettino lavished praise on the team for how they have proven all their detractors wrong. After not having signed anybody in last summer’s transfer window, Spurs were largely tipped to finish outside the top 4.

Speaking after the game, the Argentine told Football.London, “It’s about now praising the squad, the players, to be in the position we are in the Premier League, no-one believed at the beginning of the season that this squad was capable of being there. Because of our belief, how hard we work, our mentality and everything, we are there.”

Pochettino also praised the team’s character after what was the third consecutive Premier League game in which Spurs have scored a winner in the final 10 minutes.

He added: “In some parts, of course, we are showing great mentality. But in the end to win the games, sometimes you need some luck, some coincidence that happens in football, some situations, for me the most important thing is the team in a great level of belief, character, and mentality, with a lot of circumstances we are again showing that we can win in any stadium and against any club. That is most important.”
