Pochettino praises Alderweireld as defender’s future at Spurs remains in doubt

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has been his usual dominant and no-nonsense self in the centre of the Spurs back line this season, despite difficult circumstances.

Under recently, Spurs were unable to field a consistent central defensive partnership due to injuries to the likes of Vertonghen and Sanchez.

This means that Alderweireld has played on the left side and the right side, as well as playing alongside Vertonghen, Sanchez, Foyth, and even Ben Davies at the back.

Despite this chopping and changing back four, Alderweireld has consistently performed to a high standard, which only highlights how much Spurs need him moving forward.

The club extended his contract earlier this year, but this means he will be available to sign for just £25m in the summer.

The best case scenario for Spurs at the moment is if Toby decides to see out his contract and stay another year, at which point they can attempt to persuade him to sign a new deal.

In the mean time, Pochettino has heaped praise on his input this season (Football London): “Yes. I am happy with his performance, of course. And he is playing. Of course, he is not injured and that’s important and I think he is doing a very important season.”
