Pochettino praises Liverpool over significant signing

It has been well publicised that Tottenham have not signed a single player in the last two transfer windows. Despite this, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been competing valiantly against sides that have spent huge amounts on their squad.

Tottenham have not finished below Liverpool in the league since Pochettino took over back in 2014.

However, the Reds have now moved above Spurs and are mounting a serious title challenge, thanks in part to the signing of Virgil van Dijk, whose services Liverpool acquired from Southampton for £70 million last January.

While people balked at the transfer fee when the singing occurred, the Dutchman has turned the Reds into a solid outfit at the back.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has said that Liverpool have got Van Dijk on the cheap considering that he could help them win the Premier League or the Champions League.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Argentine said, “When a team like Liverpool need to improve their team in a certain area, people said it was crazy to pay £70m for a centre-back.

“But Liverpool were right. They picked Van Dijk, because at that moment they believed he was the best centre-back in England who could make them better, and they were right.

“Some people said: ‘Why would you pay £70m for a centre-back?’ But the people who believed other things have now been shown that Liverpool were right.

“If you are going to sign the player who is going to improve your team, then it is not a lot of money. Because when you consider what it means to win a Champions League or a Premier League, it is cheaper to spend this type of money.”
