Pochettino reveals why Michel Vorm left Spurs last summer

Tottenham Hotspur welcomed back a familiar face this week as Michel Vorm signed a new one-year deal with the club just months after seeing his contract run down.

Spurs released the Dutchman in June but welcomed him back earlier this week after suffering a long-term injury to captain and keeper Hugo Lloris.

Lloris managed to dislocate his elbow while attempting to prevent a goal in the early minutes against Brighton. Unfortunately, the club captain managed to both hurt himself and hand the home side a free early lead.

Paulo Gazzaniga came in to replace the Frenchman on that day and it seems likely that he will now assume the position of number one, with Vorm as the back-up keeper.

Pochettino has had nothing but nice things to say about Vorm in his press conference today as one of the first players he signed during the early days at the club. It seems as if the new contract was a no-brainer.

Pochettino said (Football London): “He arrived in a sad moment because Hugo injured but in the same way he’s a face that we all love. The players love him and the coaching staff and the club love him. He was a player who we signed when we first arrived. He spent five and a half years with us, finished in the final of the Champions League. For different reasons he wanted a new challenge or experience but it didn’t happen like that and when Hugo was injured we contacted him and he was more than kind enough to join us and help the team to turn the situation and help the team achieve what we want.

“The position is different. He’s going to need some time. It was a special situation that happened to sign him. We trust him. He was training. He needs to be on the pitch, in the goal. But I’m sure he will be ready as soon as possible, quickly.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

A much-needed and smart signing by Spurs. The best they could have done in a bad situation and Vorm has never let the club down when called upon.
