Tottenham Hotspur fell to Chelsea yet again in a domestic cup semi final, losing the two-legged tie after a penalty shootout.
Spurs went into the fixture 1-0 up on aggregate after a VAR assisted penalty from Harry Kane in the first leg.
However, Pochettino’s main may was unavailable from the spot last night, as was Dele Alli, with both players out injured until early March.
Heung Min Son, another experienced penalty taker was also missing, away on international duty with South Korea.
Kieran Trippier wasn’t in the match day squad, although Spurs could have done with some of his World Cup penalty experience after full time.
Dier hit the target in Russia to beat Colombia on pens, but it was the midfield man who claimed the first miss of the contest against Chelsea.
Tottenham fought well, especially when you consider they were 2-0 down at half time and severely depleted due to injury.
Poch said (Football London): “Disappointed to lose in that way, but it can happen. It was a signal that we fought and were brave, and in all the circumstances we played really well. Until we conceded the first goal, I think we were in control of the game. I told the players in the first half that the way we played from the back in the first half, it was one of the best games that we’ve played. Of course it was tough to arrive in the last third. Until we conceded the first goal I think it was under control but then we conceded the second goal quickly.
“It was tough in that period but, in the second half, we changed something in the team and started to play in a different way, and it was difficult for Chelsea to adapt and read the situation or try to stop us. We started to control the game, that is why we scored and had a few chances more. Only I can feel proud, with all the circumstances, to arrive to penalties in that tough period for us, only I can congratulate my players and feel proud. That is the way that if we want to arrive and win, is to play and show that we are ready to compete in this type of level.”
