Pochettino reveals he was ‘so close’ to signing Spurs star at Southampton

Tottenham Hotspur managed to scrape through a tough period in January and February without their star attackers Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Despite these absences, Spurs didn’t drop a single point in the Premier League until Kane’s return, and even battered Borussia Dortmund 3-0 in the Champions League.

The likes of Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, and Fernando Llorente deserve a lot of the plaudits for this superb run of form, but one man stood out in a Spurs shirt.

Heung Min Son was rattling in the goals week in week out before and after his stint away with South Korea.

In fact, he scored 11 goals since December 19, putting his name near the top of the pile for player of the season this year.

However, it could have been so different in Pochettino had his way at Southampton.

The Argentine has now revealed that he was so close to signing Son for the Saints during his time there.

Poch said (Football London): “We were very close but in the end he was so young and his family preferred, rather than leaving Germany and the Bundesliga, to keep him there and he preferred to move to Bayer Leverkusen rather than Southampton. But we were so close.”
