Pochettino reveals why he left Christian Eriksen out of the starting XI yesterday

Tottenham Hotspur already have a defeat on their scorecard for the new Premier League season after they lost 1-0 yesterday.

Many would have expected a defeat in the opening three games for the Lilywhites, but the majority would have pegged Man City to be responsible.

Spurs started the season off with a win over Aston Villa before taking a point away from the home of the champions with a 2-2 result.

However, this feels rather meaningless now for Pochettino and his team after the loss at home to Newcastle, a game which they would expect to win comfortably this season.

Christian Eriksen was once again left on the bench against the Magpies, just as he was against Villa two weeks ago.

On that first game week, the Great Dane was the hero from the bench, but it was not to be a repeated trick yesterday.

One journalist asked Pochettino why he left Eriksen out and whether it was due to off-field speculation, to which Poch replied (Football London): “No, I cannot pick more than 11 players. A decision like that when you have plenty of players, but I understand a question like that. Should the result be 3-0 or 4-0 you’re not going to ask me that question but of course, I accept it. The players who are out are always good when you don’t win.”
