Mauricio Pochettino has revealed why he decided to return to the pitch to stand in front of the Tottenham Hotspur fans following the draw in Barcelona.
Following the hard fought 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp which secured his side’s place in the next round of the Champions League, the Tottenham boss appeared on the pitch with the rest of his players immediately after the final whistle to congratulate his side and applaud the travelling support.
However, after ten minutes in the bowels of the Nou Camp he reappeared on the pitch while the Spurs fans were being kept behind after the match to show his appreciation to the 4,500 people who had made the trip to watch their side turn in a spirited performance.
Despite being positioned in the upper section of the 99,354 capacity stadium, the Spurs fans were in fine voice all night and could easily be heard on the television coverage.
Pochettino was grateful for their support and was happy to share the delight of keeping their Champions League campaign on track.
He told the club’s official site: “It was being respectful to everyone and thanking them for their support,”
“There are many, many people here and to share the happiness with them was so important. In all football clubs, the fans are a very important part of the success and key for the club, the team and the players. That’s why I wanted to say ‘hello’ and say ‘thank you’,”
