Pochettino reveals why this player has not been starting games

Tottenham Hotspur have been in sensational form over the Christmas period, something that always seems to happen under Mauricio Pochettino.

When the games come thick and fast, Tottenham always seem to do well and pick up points off their surrounding rivals.

Perhaps this is down to the fitness regime at Tottenham, and Pochettino’s commitment to rotating the squad in order to give everyone a chance.

This also keeps everyone fresh and ready to fight once their chance comes around.

However, one man who has not been starting many matches of late is fellow Argentine Erik Lamela.

Pochettino has named the winger on the bench most weeks, but he has not been giving him the nod from the start, despite heavy rotation.

Poch has now revealed that this is down to Lamela’s chronic injury problems, as the club continue to assess him ahead of each and every game.

The attacker may be able to start against Wolves on Saturday.

Poch said this when asked if the lack of starts was down to worries over Lamela’s injuries (Football London): “Yes.”

He was then asked whether Lamela could start against Wolves: “Maybe. We need to assess him too because yesterday he wasn’t in his best to play. He was on the bench but we preferred after, when the game was 4-0 or 5-0, not to take a risk with him.”
