Pochettino says Conor Gallagher needs to improve on one thing amid Spurs links

Amidst reports linking Conor Gallagher with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur, Mauricio Pochettino has praised the midfielder for his commitment but wants to see him score more goals.

It is certainly not a secret that Tottenham are big fans of Gallagher, with the North London club having been linked with the 23-year-old right from last summer.

Reports over the last few days have continued to insist that Spurs are keeping an eye on the England international’s situation and are ready to pounce in the summer as contract talks between his entourage and Chelsea have not progressed (TEAMtalk).

The Blues’ financial troubles have been well-documented, with some financial experts of the opinion that they would have to generate £100m in ‘pure profit’ early in the summer, which is why they might have to sell some of their academy graduates (talkSPORT).

Pochettino is still a big fan of Conor Gallagher

However, it is certainly clear that Pochettino would keep Gallagher if it was up to him, with the Chelsea boss now waxing lyrical about the player.

When asked about the midfielder’s selection in the England squad, the former Tottenham manager told Football.London: “He’s always 200 per cent in every single appearance and training. He needs to keep performing and keep this commitment always as it’s one of his best skills.

“He has the capacity to always be ready to fight, to commit, to help and then showing his quality. Yes, he needs to keep believing and trying to improve in this way.

“The other challenge for him is to score more goals. I think from the beginning of the season was really tough for him but now he’s scoring and feeling more confident. And I think now to grow in this reaction is the most important thing for him.”

The Chelsea hierarchy would not mind Pochettino pumping up Gallagher’s tyres as that only inflates his transfer value ahead of the summer.

However, given the financial situation the Blues are in, they are not in a position to demand £50m for the 23-year-old. Levy and co will look to take advantage of their desperation and complete a deal for closer to £30m.
