Pochettino says Spurs used their problems as motivation

Tottenham beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage yesterday courtesy of a brace of second-half headers from Dele Alli and Harry Winks.

Tottenham went into the game ravaged by injuries with the likes of Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and Victor Wanyama all on the treatment table and Son Heung-Min away with South Korea at the Asia Cup.

To make matters worse Spurs were largely outplayed in the first half and went 1-0 down when Fernando Llorente bizarrely put the ball into his own net.

Far from letting their heads drop, however, Tottenham came out and took the game to Fulham in the second half.

Spurs eventually got the winner late in stoppage time when Harry Winks who won the ball deep in Tottenham’s half and started the attack, busted a gut to get into the box and nodded home the winner from Nkoudou’s cross.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, Pochettino told football.london that the team used their problems to spur them on during the game, and will continue to do the same in the coming weeks.

He said, “But we’re the opposite way. More problems, more positives, more optimistic. The team wasn’t down. The team was keeping trying”

“In football, you cannot be affected by the thing that happened. When the game finishes you can be disappointed and all the emotion arrives, but during the game, the most important thing was the team wasn’t affected by that situation.”
